"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I hope the years have eased the pain for your family, I recall giving a hug to your son durring the funeral. I had my first child born this year, I hope your children are well. I look back at the funerals I have attended for fallen officers........ My goal this holiday is to let the survivors know, your brother/sister officers never forget you. Every man or woman that wears a badge wish you and you family/friends the best holiday they could have without you.

Please look over us as we go to work.

Frankie, As we called him,
He was a dear father and devoted grandfather for 3 month's.
Frankie loved doing what he did the most, and that was protecting people. I loved frankie like he was my own daddy,he gave good advice. He loved his new granddaughter Amber alot,And since then he had another granddaughter Morgan which was born in 1996. I leave them what he taught us and the goodness that he shared , and alway's doing unto other's as you would unto yourself and that's helping people no matter what. I wanted to share this with his friend's he would thank me for it.

Frankie,

Too often have I sat down to leave this
reflection, but couldn't. But on summer nights, I often reminisce about some of the happiest days of my life -
and you are there.

I remember our young families in a simpler and safer world, strong bodies with no pain, the eagerness to learn and to serve our town.

I always go back to slow patrols with the windows rolled down. The cool, night air smells of a town going to sleep, and us hoping for the radio to crackle the numbers 412/413.

You died doing what you loved, so much.
I know how alive you felt.

I miss you old friend.

I remember growing up watching your car go by my house. Our community felt the impact of your death. You never really think this could happen so close to home. Thank you, Frankie for helping to make our world a much safer place. Your sacrifice was ultimate and you will not be forgotten. Your neighbors remember and always will.

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).

We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God."

Frankie,
You will never know how upset I was upon learning of your death years ago. You were always so sweet and kind to me when I was running around with your twins. You treated me like a daughter. Your sweet smile still lingers in my mind. You touched many lives and were loved by all. I'm all grown up now and doing the same thing you loved. I hope that I can be the officer that you were.
