To Sgt. Earl Murray Jr., to all family members and friends who call him beloved, and to his law enforcement family:

I was sorry to learn of Earl's death and extend my sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you have suffered. Words are insufficient to describe the sadness I feel for the Murray family. May you find comfort in your faith and the support of the law enforcement community.

There are many police survivors who share this same journey with you, and that community will be there to support you. Earl's memory will be forever honored and revered.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the years of distinquished service Earl gave to his community and the citizens of North Carolina and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on May 15, 2009.

I had the distinct honor and priviledge to have known and
worked with Earl Murray as deputies assigned to District A in Patrol Division for the Dare Co. S.O. An even greater blessing was to have been very close to Earl outside of work. He and his family have always been very dear to me and I loved him, not like, but as a brother.

Earl was a man of strong faith. He was a devoted husband who adored his wife. He was a proud father who cherished his daughters. He was a fair and honest police officer who quickly took charge, but was also able to de-escalate most any volatile situation. His patrol car and uniform were impeccable and his integrity was beyond reproach. Earl was an inspiration to others around him and I hope that he knew how much I admired him.

Though I left the Outer Banks of N.C. ten (10) years ago and went to work for an agency in the center of the state, Earl and I still remained close and kept in contact with one another. Whenever I returned to visit I was certain to contact him in advance to ensure that we would be able to visit while I was home.

Earl meant a great deal to me and I am very proud to call him my friend. Throughout my life I've met many people from all walks of life, but Earl was very unique. Very few people will cross our path in life and have a positive influence with the kind of magnitude as Earl has.

I am truly thankful for having been blessed with the time that I knew Earl Murray and I look forward to one day seeing him again in the presence of our Lord.

I learned of Earl's death a few hours before the national memorial service in Washington, DC, which I attended with a very heavy heart. It's so sad to see the names of so many officers who gave their lives in service to their communities. Yet it is an honor to stand in support of the families that have been left behind. Next year, I will stand there again and listen as the name of my good friend is read at roll call.

Earl Murray was the genuine article, the epitomy of a good ol' boy from a small town in eastern North Carolina. I had the priviliege of knowing him for more than 14 years. I also worked with him for a couple of years at DCSO. There was never a time he didn't greet me with a smile or a handshake. If I ever needed him he was there, whether to answer a question, back me up on a call, or simply talk NASCAR or family. Earl was a great person and I am proud to have known him as an officer, and a friend. I will truly miss him.

Rest in peace, 105. We'll take it from here.

Earl was one of those officers that you considered a lifelong friend; (we’ve known each other for 25 years)…you might not see each other for a few weeks or a few months, but when you did, it was like you’d just spoken the day before.
I remember many nights on duty, hitting signal 9 at the Golden Corral, and laughing until we thought we were going to fall off of our chairs…Earl was just that way….

I remember discussions at high school volleyball games, with our daughters playing on opposing teams, and seeing the pride shining in his eyes while he watched one his girls playing…

I remember when Earl and his wife were dating and then married, and over the years, his obvious love for her never seemed to fade.

I remember attending training, and rooming together at the Justice Academy and making the drive to his parents’ restaurant….and Earl laughing at me the first time I ever tried pickled watermelon rind…at his insistence…

Earl, friend for life, brother forever, you are missed, you will be remembered, you made a difference.

Earl, you will be sadly missed. Your "Buddy Roe" and "Dag Gummit" will be forever echoed in our halls. Your “Outer Banks Drain Hole Theory” will be carried on as well as ridding the world of the word, “PVA”. Earl was a good cop, and a stand up human being. No matter how bad your day was, he could tell a few jokes and get you back on your feet, even when he was having a bad day, he could joke about it. I consider it a privilege to have worked with you in the short amount of time that I did.

I worked with Earl for 3 years and I can truly say the world lost one of the 'good ones'. Earl loved his two girls to death and was a devote family man.
As a supervisor he was nothing but class and as a fellow officer, he always had time to listen and offer advice and help with problems. Earl you were one of the best people I have ever met in this line of work and you will be truly missed.
My deepest condolences go out to Kim, Sami Jo and Paige. Rest easy my friend and know that the boys in blue have the watch now. I look forward to the day we can see each other again. Until then 105 is 10-42
