Thank you all for writing and sharing your thoughts about Eric. I visit this site every so often and it overwhelms me to know that so many others still remember and honor him. He died while living out his dream as a state trooper. Every day he is missed and I know that he is in heaven watching over us all. God bless those still serving and their families.

9 years ago. So sad you were cheated out of living more of your dreams. America needs more fine men like you. You have a special place in all the hearts of people that knew and loved you. Thanks for your wonderful sacrifice of service to America.

I just saw your wife on TV talking about the NC Trooper killed a few days ago. You should be proud of her she seems to ba a very strong and good willed person. Its been eight years since you were taken away from her and she still had tears in her eyes speaking of you. That is True Love and you are lucky to have her. You will be together again and this pain will be whipped away for Goodness shall follow us the rest of our days. To the wife we are truly sorry of your loss. We are hear for you always. Respectfully.

Of all the Troopers killed in the line of duty here in our state, I will always remember you the most. I will never forget the day that you left this earth. I was in patrol school and was two days from graduating. I remember all the other guys talking about how cool it was going to be to drive that silver bullet to our asigned counties. We were so exited that we were going to be the man in grey! The instructors with tears in their eyes gathered us in a classroom to tell us the news and to hand out funeral bands for our shiny new badges. It was such an overwhelming feeling to hear the tragic news. On one hand we were exited to be graduating and on the other we had a hard time expressing that feeling due to our sadness. I would like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice to this great state! Rest in peace brother, and watch over us as we continue the fight!

I knew you as Private Eric Nicholson , We stood side by side in formation for what seemed an eternity at Parris Island (Plt. 2005)and we walked the parade deck on Jan 10. 1992 and were called Marines for the first time together, I remembered you as soon as I saw the picture here 16 years later and I could not believe what I know to be true .
I became a Police Officer in 1998 after leaving the Corps I guess about the same time you began your career as a Trooper.
So many of us are drawn to this line of work I guess it just seems natural for us to risk our lives to protect others ,You made the ultimate Sacrifice doing what you beleived in and there is no greater a Hero than those that lay down their lives for others.
You are a Hero God Bless You , Semper Fi Brother

Eric, Everytime that I see your picture on this page I go back to the days of highschool and all of the mischief we got into. I'm always going to remember you as Amy's kid brother (knucklebrain!) but more so, I'm going to remember you as a friend that was taken way too soon. I still raise a glass to you and hope that you and your family know that it doesnt matter how much time passes, we will never forget you.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Not a day goes by that I am at work that I do not talk to you. Every time I go through a door, every time I stop a car...I know you are the angel on my shoulder. There are no words that describe the feeling of loss we all have. Days, months, years...time does not heal wounds, but you learn to accept. Please welcome those who go before us, and continue to watch over us.

Eric, I'll never ever forget that tragic day as I received a phone call at my residence telling me what just occurred. I was actually putting on my uniform to come to work on 2nd shift that day. Once I got the news, I turned on my radio as I rushed to get ready. As I was listening to what was transpiring, I had so many emotions. At first I was numb, thinking this can not be happening, then I was just so sad and then angry.

As I went 10-8, I felt so helpless in many ways. I was listening to the radio to get all the BOLO info that I could, but it was a confusing situation. Shortly after I went 10-8, I found out the suspect was arrested in another county.

Please know that I think about you often, and many times I salute you when I pass the location on Woodruff Rd. where this senseless tragedy occurred. C-181 will always be remembered as a HERO. To my brother in gray, rest in peace and we'll take it from here.

Eric I hope you had fun watching over our High School Reunion last weekend. We all miss you and love you. Your mom came and it was nice to see her. I know it would have been better to have you there but to know that you are up there in a much better place watching over us is nice to know. Love and miss you!!

Knuckles, its over 5 years now and it feels like yesterday. I think it always will. I am so proud to know you were my friend and that I know you were doing what you love to do helping others, defending what's right. I think of you so often and you come to me in my dreams and it helps me get through a bad day when I think of how you made us laugh. I am just now able to listen to a Rolling Stones and/or Zeppelin song in its entirety, its hard but it helps at the same time. God Bless you and your family. Your friend, Kristen
