Bryant, it's hard to believe it's been almost nine years now since you were taken from us. I still remember that day vividly and think of you often. You were a great training officer and friend! Your family seems to be doing really well, but I know they miss you dearly. Please continue to watch over all of the troopers here in D2. You will not be forgotton....

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

It has been six years since your tragic line of duty death. Please know that you are not forgotten and your valor and dedication to your job is still remembered and honored.

I hope that your loved ones are still comforted by the caring and support of their law enforcement family, and other police survivors.

Our family lost our beloved Larry Lasater when he was fatally shot during a foot pursuit of two bank robbers on April 23, 2005. Larry was a North Carolina native, and we still have many family members there.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the service Trooper Davis gave to his community and the citizens of North Carolina, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on October 21. 1999.

Bryant Davis was one of the finest troopers to ever wear the uniform of a NC state trooper. He was dedicated to his profession and loved his job. He was a Christian and was dedicated to his family. He would be retired by now and enjoying his golden years, however it was not meant to be. Bryant was my fishing buddy and I miss him now as much as the say he died. Rest in peace my friend, one day we will meet again.

As a patrol officer it sure does feel good when you need backup to look in the rearview mirror and see the "gray and black" pulling up. The NCSHP can ALWAYS be counted on! Thank every single trooper for their dedication.

I knew this fine man when I was a trooper many years ago. Such a sad loss of a good man doing such a worthy job.

The Old North State lost one of it's finest on this dark day. God Bless his family, friends and colleagues. He now patrols the streets of Heaven with St. Michael.

Bryant, you were not just a co-worker but much more. A friend, a brother Trooper and most of all an example. You always displayed a positive attitude no matter what came your way. You loved your wife and two girls more than anything in this world and displayed that during your time here. The example of your life and knowing you has truley changed my life forever.
