Doug, I wasn't there when you were called away to be with the Lord Our God, but one thing I know without reservation is that someday very soon God is going to give a blast from that heavenly trumpet calling all of his troops home for that final roll call around his throne. until that time I will miss you buddy and I will extend to you the honer that you have earned and deserve. I still remember the night you were taken away. I was patrolling the Hardy Toll Road monoriting the SO channel and heard everything. I was actually enroute to back you up when I heard it over the radio. I didnt know you that well, but remember you backing me up on a few situations. You always had a smile on your face and was very pleasant to be around. I know you are missed by all the police community. Take care brother!

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

It has been a long 10 years buddy. I was reading some of Shane Bennetts reflections and was thinking of you. I know that you would be one of the stars of our department. One day we will meet again. May God hold you in his heart. The Millionaires club sure misses you.

Even though it has been 9 years, I think of you often. I will never forget that night. I just couldn't "pull the rabbit out of the hat" that time....
Each time I sit down and put on that headset, the officers are my responsibility. Every time I "call" a pursuit or have an officer involved in an accident, I take care of the job and then I "remember". As I train new dispatchers, I draw upon my experience and try to convey the seriousness of the job.
Thank you Doug for your smile and your willingness to do the job, even though sometimes I would "ping pong" you back and forth across the district.
You are missed.

Man it seems like yesterday that I was at the scene. Sometimes when I drive by the intersection I am in a daze remembering. Me and Garrett talk about you alot and miss your goofy attitude.
I know that God laughs alot with you around.
