Patrolman Leonard Meeks was killed in an automobile accident while responding to an officer needs assistance call in Chatham County.
His vehicle skidded off the roadway and struck a tree on PMoncure-Pittsboro Road.
Patrolman Meeks was a U.S Marine Corps veteran and had served with the North Carolina Highway Patrol for three years. He was survived by his wife and two children.
In October 2013 the North Carolina Department of Transportation renamed the Rocky River Bridge on US 64, east of Siler City, in his honor.
