Police Officer Daniel Maloney was shot and killed by an attempted rape suspect while trying to stop a suspicious vehicle.

Dispatchers had just taken the call from the victim and were getting ready to broadcast it when Officer Maloney radioed in the suspicious vehicle. When he attempted to stop the vehicle, it sped away, and Officer Maloney chased it into a dead-end on Challedon Drive. The suspect jumped out of the vehicle and ran towards Officer Maloney's police car, firing, striking him several times through the driver's window.

Officer Maloney was able to radio that he had been shot as the suspect returned to his car and fled. Another officer stopped the vehicle, and the suspect immediately exited and opened fire. The officer returned fire and killed the suspect.

Officer Maloney had served with the Virginia Beach Police Department for three years.

I remember Jim Maloney, and his fallen son Daniel, who died in the line of duty. The tributes to him are powerful, moving. In case anyone needs to know, officer Maloney is buried in the same cemetery as his parents, Jim and Dolores. I lived down the block on Mumford St from Jim. Was a wonderful neighbor. The cemetery where Daniel and his parents are buried is Nativity Cemetery in Orchard Park, NY. Daniel, may he rest in peace was 35 yrs.old.
