Deputy Sheriff Ernest Loll was shot and killed while investigating a report of bird poachers in the area of SW Arnold Street and SW 35th Avenue in Portland. While talking with one suspect he had located, he was ambushed by a second suspect. The man was hiding in a nearby bush and shot him with a shotgun.
Both 23-year-old suspects fled to Moclipse, Washington, where they were later located by members of the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office and Oregon State Police. Both men were apprehended and returned to Oregon for questioning. They both confessed to their roles in Deputy Loll's murder.
The shooter was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life. His companion was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Both were paroled in 1946.
Deputy Loll was a United States Army veteran of World War I. He was survived by his wife and two daughters.
