He was off duty at the time and returning to the city after taking a ride in their car. Patrolman Kosmal was able to calm the two men and move them onto the curb. When it seemed as though the men were calm he began to walk back to his car when the two men suddenly attacked him from behind, stabbed him in the back, and then shot him three times.
