Sheriff Kearbey was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a wanted criminal.

Sheriff Kearbey received a tip that a man wanted for murder was hiding in a certain section of the woods. Sheriff Kearbey took several deputies to the location to search for the suspect. When they located the suspect, the suspect drew a firearm and shot Sheriff Kearbey, killing him.

Sheriff Kearby had served with the Butler County Sheriff's Department for two years and was survived by his wife and two children.
