Officer Victor Estefan was shot and killed after making a traffic stop. As he approached the vehicle to get the driver's information he was shot and killed. The suspects, who were brothers, were arrested in California after a shootout with the California Highway Patrol during a nation-wide manhunt. Both suspects were convicted and sentenced to death.

Officer Estefan was survived by his wife, son, daughter, and grandson.
