Officer Vincent DeVivo suffered a fatal heart attack after being assaulted by a suspect at Jericho Turnpike and MacArthur Avenue in West Hills.
Officer DeVivo was investigating a motor vehicle crash on September 17, 1962. While conducting his investigation, one of the drivers attacked him and the other driver. He was struck in the chest during the altercation. After subduing the subject, he placed him under arrest for driving while intoxicated. While transporting the driver to jail, Officer DeVivo began to suffer severe chest pains at the intersection of High Street and New York Avenue. He was taken to Huntington Hospital in critical condition. On October 28, 1962, Officer DeVivo suffered another heart attack at Huntington Hospital, which proved to be fatal.
The subject was found guilty of third-degree assault and received a one-year suspended sentence.
Officer DeVivo had served with the Suffolk County Police Department for two years. He was survived by his wife, two children, parents, and two sisters.
