Corporal Sanford was shot and killed as he tried to stop a robbery in progress. Corporal Sanford was off duty when he witnessed a suspect holding a gas station attendant at gunpoint. He entered the business through a side entrance, identified himself, and ordered the suspect to drop the gun. Unknown to Corporal Sanford, a second suspect was in one of the aisles. The second suspect shot Corporal Sanford from behind, killing him. The suspect was convicted of capital murder.

Corporal Sanford was survived by his wife, son and parents.
