Add to My HeroesLarry James Nehasil
Officer Larry Nehasil was shot and killed in Walled Lake while conducting surveillance on two brothers wanted in connection with several burglaries and home invasion robberies.
He and several other officers had followed the suspects to a home in a Walled Lake neighborhood. After observing the men break into a home the officers attempted to arrest them.
One of the men fled out of the back door with Officer Nehasil chasing him. The man opened fire, striking Officer Nehasil. Despite being wounded, Officer Nehasil returned fire and killed the man. The other suspect was arrested and charged with second degree murder. He pleaded no contest to the charges and was subsequently sentenced to 100 to 150 years in prison.
Officer Nehasil had served with the Livonia Police Department for 20 years and had previously served with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. He is survived by his wife and two children.

View all 268 ReflectionsAs we approach another anniversary of the day this world lost an amazing father, husband, friend and a true hero, I would like Larry’s family to know that Larry and his family are in my family’s prayers EVERY night. I met Larry at Powerhouse gym in Highland, Mi. I was never the type of person to talk to a lot of people at the gym as I was always looking to get in and out, but I always made it a point to say hi to Larry. Larry had a presence to him… he was just one of those guys that you would be stupid to mess with by looking at him (especially with that new tattoo), but at the same time, when talking to him… you would quickly find that he was truly one of the nicest guys you had ever met. As a newly-married guy in my 20’s with a baby on the way, after getting to know Larry, he truly became an example of the man I had aspired to become. A family man, a father, a protector, and an honest to God nice person.
A Quick, yet a little embarrassing story…., when I met Larry, I swore his name was Eric. Not sure where I got it, but I called him by Eric for at least the first month I spoke to him. And Guess what, instead of correcting me, maybe embarrassing me a little, Larry went by Eric…. He never said a word! That’s the guy he was and the guy that I always will remember him as. A guy that gave his life protecting people that he had never met. A guy that did his best to make this, sometimes disgusting, world a better place and for his family and absolute strangers. And a guy I think about every time I step in the gym in order to train hard enough so that when it truly matters, I might be brave enough to fight to the very end the way Larry did. Larry left a lasting impression on me that I will never ever forget. I will forever be grateful to have called Larry (Eric) my friend. I know that Larry is still protecting those he loved so dearly from where he is now as he did on earth, and he will always be one of the very few that I look up to! Larry, thank you for inspiring me to be a better man every day I wake up! You will never be forgotten. Rest in peace my friend!
