Railroad Detective Frank Lakey was shot to death as he was patrolling a railroad yard near Asheville, North Carolina.

Several weeks later an 18 year-old youth, arrested in Greenville, South Carolina, confessed that he shot Detective Lakey and was charged with his murder.
