Trooper Zimmerman was attempting to join the pursuit when his patrol car went out of control and struck a utility pole near the intersection of Route 9 and Route 83.
The suspect was later apprehended and charged with robbery and felony murder in connection with Trooper Zimmerman's death. On May 31, 2006, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He also pleaded guilty to three armed robberies and was sentenced to an additional 20 years in prison.

I can't believe it has been 20 years since you have gone. You have missed so many things over the years, and it breaks my heart when you are not there. One of the biggest was when Michelle got married last year, two days after your birthday!! Joey was the life of the wedding. He takes exactly after you! Next week we are going to one of our favorite vacation places growing up, the Outer Banks. We will be there for your birthday. We will be taking your picture and taking some family pictures. I love you and miss you more every day!
