Sheriff Berg was killed in an automobile accident at 4:45 p.m. in Portage County while transporting a prisoner to the Winnebago Mental Health Facility.
Sheriff Berg's patrol car was struck by another vehicle and he was ejected from the vehicle. The incident occurred about .75 miles west of Nelsonville, WI on County Road SS (Old Highway 10). Sheriff Berg was killed instantly.
The suspect, who was the wife of a prominent businessman in the area, was headed up north for vacation when she sped past a car on a hill and struck the Sheriff's vehicle nearly head-on. Although the suspect was charged with first-degree manslaughter, the charges were dismissed after Sheriff Berg's widow received a financial settlement and did not wish to pursue the charges.
Sheriff Berg had served with the Wood County Sheriff's Department for 24 years. He was survived by his wife and six children and is buried in Wisconsin Rapids.

Unfortunately working in IT has allowed me to work with many different police departments/government facilities and see many issues that plague them today and many things my grandfather spoke with me about before his retirement/passing.
Power, greed, racism and money have caused corruption across many cities/departments which is unfortunate as I was always taught Police Officers should be Resolute which many are but the folks calling the shots cause alot of influence and persuasion to alter police officers decisions causing many "bad apples" on the force. At this time the the Supreme Court ruled that the police do not have a constitutional duty to protect a person from harm which makes me feel my grandfather was right and things were changing across police forces that no longer would stand for the people rights/protection that they served for.
I will always continue to do what's right in my heart and stay resolute as I know that's what you would have expected from me even though I'm sure we would also disagree on some things :)
Hopefully someday I can make it Dalsland Sweden back to our roots and Germany on the otherside of the family tree.
I also hope when this is all over the universe will realign our conciousness so we can eventually communicate our beliefs with compassion, love and empathy.
Forever in my thoughts/memories
