As they were attempting to force open a door, Trooper Bailey's gun went off, striking him. He was transported to Methodist Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

Steve you are missed and I think of you often! We had just come to know one another the summer prior to your death. I ever will forget being called to assist you on the night of your untimely death.
Some how the premonition I had at our briefing prior to the warrant service would come to pass and the incident would be with me for the remainder of my 39 years with ISP as well as my life.
Lord knows I tried to give aid in what was a hopeless situation and the most important thing I could do was comfort you, talk to you and tell you to hang on, you’ll be okay and not leave you alone.
I can’t help but think my entire 42 years with ISP, some how you were with me watching my six.

Rest easy and well my friend! Once a trooper, always a trooper….
