Captain Auble and another detective had been called to a residence by a landlord because of suspicious activity by two men residing there. The officers were able to peek in and observe the occupants and hear enough conversation to convince them that they were planning to commit several burglaries. The two suspects then left and the landlord allowed them entrance to the room where a lot of evidence indicated they were committing crimes and were planning more.
The next day the officers attempted to arrest the men at 9th and Central Avenue. One was taken down but the other pulled a revolver and shot Captain Auble in the throat, abdomen, and chest. The other detective returned fire hitting the suspect once as he fled. Hours later he was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Captain Auble was taken to the city prison hospital where they operated on him before he passed away.
Captain Auble was survived by his wife, two daughters, and son. |
