Detective Thompson was stabbed by a suspect he had just arrested. Detective Thompson and his partner were working plainclothes when arrested two men for disorderly conduct and were walking them to a phone to call for a paddy wagon. Detective Thompson's prisoner produced a knife and stabbed him several times. His partner shot and killed the suspect.

Detective Thompson had been with the agency for three years and was survived by his wife.
