Pilot Shute and Inspector James Carter were killed in an airplane accident near Comstock, Texas, while searching for illegal aliens. They had signaled to a ground-team that they had spotted the group and began to circle around. The plane suddenly went into a steep climb from 100 feet to 450 feet, stalled, and then descended into the ground. Inspector Carter and Pilot Shute were both killed in impact.
