Deputy Collector Robson was shot and killed in Skeleton Canyon, New Mexico, while riding with a posse from Arizona in search of several bank robbery suspects.

One of the suspects who murdered Deputy Collector Robson had been involved in the murder of Chief Milton Jones of the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Police Department on June 30, 1895. The suspect was killed in Arizona in 1897.

Deputy Collector Robson was survived by his wife and family.
