Corporal Haddock was in a canoe with fellow officer Constable A.D. Allen. They were traveling to a cabin up the Yukon River to apprehend a trapper.

Early morning just after midnight their canoe encountered a submerged log and capsized. Constable Allen tried to assist Corporal Haddock but lost sight of him. Constable Allen was later rescued by a steamer.

A search was organized but Corporal Haddock's body was never recovered.
