Northwest Mounted Police Federal End of Watch: Tuesday, October 29, 1895 Cause: Gunfire
Biographical Info Age: 33 Tour of Duty: 14 years Badge Number: 605 Sergeant Colebrook was the first of three Mounties to be killed by an Indian named Almighty Voice. He died at Kinistino, NWT. Almighty Voice was arrested and held for trial for rustling cattle. He escaped from the jail and was on the run. Sergeant Colebrook along with a scout were in search of Almighty Voice.
When Sergeant Colebrook finally caught up to him he kept hollering for him to stop. As the Sergeant approached within 30 feet Almighty Voice turned and shot him in the chest with a shotgun killing him instantly. A second group assembled to capture Almighty Voice saw two more officers killed, and several officers wounded before he was shot down in a standoff that brought officers from 2 outside detachments with heavy weapons.
It took almost 2 years before Almighty Voice and 2 accomplices paid with their lives for their crimes. |
