Constable DeBeaujeu was stationed aboard a NWMP Vessel called the Keewatin. The vessel encountered severe weather in Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba. The vessel had anchored to wait out the conditions but the anchor chain broke setting the vessel adrift. The vessel eventually hit a reef and overturned.

Constable DeBeaujeu was swept to his death. Fellow officer, Corporal Harry Morphy, was swept from the vessel the following day. The Captain, Matthew Watts, a civilian, was found clinging to the wreckage 13 days after the vessel sank. He was alive but later died in hospital.

Constable DeBeaujeu's body was found 2 months later. Corporal Morphy's body was never recovered.
