Constable Burke died at Cut Knife Hill, NWT In a continuing rebellion by the natives which began in Duck Lake, NWT and continued to Frog Lake and Fort Pitt had now reached Cut Knife Hill. Constable Patrick Burke was shot in the abdomen while defending the fort from attack.

Corporal Ralph Sleigh and Corporal Lowry were also mortally wounded in the battle.
