Corporal Lawry died at Cut Knife Hill, NWT. In a continuing rebellion by the natives which began in Duck Lake, NWT and continued to Frog Lake and Fort Pitt had now reached Cut Knife Hill. Corporal Lowery was shot while defending the fort from attack.

Corporal Ralph Sleigh and Constable Patrick Burke were also mortally wounded in the battle.
