Constable Gibson died at Duck Lake, NWT in an uprising which saw the native Indians rebel against the newcomers to their land. This became known as the Battle at Duck Lake. Two other Mounties died in this battle which was one of a few battles which were yet to be fought over the next three months. Constable Gibson was shot through the heart on the battlefield.

Constable George Arnold and Constable George Garrett died the day after from the battle in which Constable Gibson died.
